Selection
"Kaleida" is an arcade style, alternative controller game where players tilt and pump the "Kaleida" to blast incoming enemies. Players tilt the 'Kaleida' to rotate enemies into their sights, then pump to fire a giant laser horizontally. Although it sounds simple, the non-orthodox control scheme of the controller provides both a unique and challenging play experience.

Early Gameplay Prototype

Early Controller Prototype
Conception
The "Kaleida" controller was conceived during a one-day controller jam where our team prototyped as many ideas as possible. The 'Kaleida' prototype emerged as our strongest concept and the idea of rotating space to fire at enemies followed.
Development
For "Kaleida", I took on both programming and game design responsibilities.

I conducted playtests for the game and controller, recorded feedback, then iterated upon the core design. The projectile speed, the feel of the laser, the scoring system; I documented and implemented the various mechanical changes the game underwent.
Result
"Kaleida" is a finalist for alt.ctrl.GDC and will be showcased on the expo floor at the Game Developers Conference 2020.
